    Marianne Smith

    Property Management Operations Manager

Meet Marianne, Harcourts WA Property Operations Manager. Her responsibilities, though quite varied, include: • supporting property managers, clients and business owners • planning, coordinating and conducting training for personal and professional development • developing property management documents, scripts and dialogues; and • visiting offices to assist with growth through implementing systems and processes which assist to plan and monitor growth goals Marianne began her real estate career working with Harcourts in South Australia’s Barossa Valley sixteen years ago. Working for an award-winning office with an exceptional training program helped her to kick-start her career and passion for real estate. After four years in this role she relocated to Central Queensland where she worked with independent offices and was employed as a Housing Officer for a coal mining company - dealing with real estate agencies as tenants on behalf of the company. Dealing with the dynamics of the Central Queensland market was an interesting challenge on which Marianne thrived; giving her a whole new perspective in real estate. After watching the Perth market for several years, Marianne took on a new adventure and moved over to Perth where she was excited to re-join the Harcourts community: “I love the people, I love the brand, it really is like a family”. Marianne trains and mentors Property Managers and Business Development Managers in the realm of industry training, overall department management and personal development, including managing workloads, and building confidence and motivation. She holds training sessions on day to day property management tasks including the Property Management Program, which helps agents receive their registration to work in the industry. She also holds group participation sessions on Business Development and Legislation Requirements in the industry. Indeed, Marianne believes that for those working their way up the real estate ladder, success is 99% determined by self-management and attitude. The heavy workload and fast-paced world of property management seems to suit Marianne, a mother to 25-year-old twins, having previously lived on a rural property, co-owned three businesses and her own portfolio of investment properties. Real estate is not only a job but a passion for Marianne, an active Property Investor who loves researching trends and following the dynamics of the property market. Marianne firmly believes in the importance of a healthy lifestyle and setting aside ‘me time’ which allows her to re-charge and meet her clients with a fresh focus and energy. Aligning with her love of Perth, Marianne says her favourite way to relax is by living a healthy lifestyle, which includes cycling around Perth’s beautiful Swan River. Harcourts is unique, Marianne says: “People are in awe of the company”. It is a close-knit group, not just at a state, but also at a national level. Setting time aside for social activities allows Harcourts colleagues to interact and connect on a deeper level. As well as building trust and friendship between colleagues, it also allows for a feeling of unity to be built across different offices, which would have at one time been classified as competition. This imbues Harcourts employees with a large network of peers they can turn to for ideas and inspiration, which in turn means Harcourts clients receive the benefit of multiple agents’ experience. Within her role, Marianne says she is continually learning and facing new challenges, because every situation in Property Management is different. She is proud of Harcourts’ leading edge technology and is constantly working to ensure the training Harcourts offers its people is of a first-class standard.

  • Paul Blakeley

    Paul Blakeley

    Chief Executive Officer

Chief Executive Officer Paul Blakeley heads up a team of five at the Harcourts WA office. Paul joined Harcourts in March 2014 after working as a General Manager for an independent Real Estate Group for 5 years. Paul’s background also includes working for 10-12 years in the banking and finance industry. In his previous role as a mortgage lender, he worked closely with real-estate agents and received many referrals. Indeed, he joined the real-estate industry when he was approached by one such agency and asked to be their regional manager for WA. Paul’s financial background affords him a unique position; he can empathise with the emotional rollercoaster experienced when buying and selling a house, and he also has a well-founded knowledge of the financial ‘nuts and bolts’ of real-estate, such as cashflows and budgeting. Working with Harcourts Paul quickly realised the amount of hard work and level of dedication required to serve real-estate clients well. ‘Clients for life’ is a mantra for all staff: “We deal with people on a personal level, it’s not all about the end transaction, it’s about getting people from Plan A to Plan B with the least possible stress by focusing on them and their needs. Our goal is to for anyone who encounters Harcourts, in whichever capacity, to be better off for that experience”. The culture of Harcourts resembles that of a large family: “Whether you are interacting with receptionists, administrators or the managing director of the company internationally, everyone gets treated the same with the same respect – there is very little hierarchy.” Perhaps the most admirable aspect of Harcourts is the company’s focus on growth at all levels, locally, nationally and internationally. Indeed, ‘Good to Great’ by Jim Collins, a highly-valued text within Harcourts, describes the concept of a ‘big hairy, audacious goal’. The goal the company works towards depends on their vision of utopia. Paul says the Harcourts brand aims to become synonymous with a trusted advisor who can take care of a person’s biggest asset. Paul’s role, therefore, is to train his staff in all the systems and processes available so that they become more successful employees. He then has the responsibility of growing the brand by encouraging quality people to join his team. He is an experienced communicator who enjoys interacting with a diverse range of people. Paul recognises the importance of giving back to the local community. As well as joining in the Harcourts Foundation’s ‘Walk a Mile’ event in support of White Ribbon, Harcourts WA has also been a proud sponsor of the Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation. In a fundraising campaign where Harcourts donated $50 for every goal the Fremantle Dockers kicked in the 2015 season, they raised nearly $15,000 for the Foundation. Similarly, nearly $15,000 was recently donated to the WA Bushfire Appeal. Paul’s passion for his job is evidenced by his willingness to do whatever is required to better assist his clients. Indeed, his work ethic truly embodies the organisation’s values of ‘do the right thing’ and ‘people first’. He would love to share the culture of Harcourts with those outside the team, and looks forward to expanding the positive impact of Harcourts into the future.
